Rab arrested five alleged members of an armed criminal gang which were behind several shooting incidents in Narayanganj recently.
They are: Riazul Islam alias "Shooter Riaz", chief of the criminal gang named after him, Jahiddul Islam, Maruf Hossain Munna, Selim, and Mahbub Mia.
Rab also recovered three foreign pistols, 12 bullets and five sharp weapons during raid in the district's different areas, Khandaker Al Moin, Rab's Legal and Media wing director told a press briefing today.
The gang members opened fire on March 29 in Rupganj, leaving one wounded. They also shot two people near their housees on March 15 in the upazila.
A girl's eye was damaged when the gang members fired shots at her neighbour's house on December 23 last year, Moin said.
During primary interrogation, the arrestees said they had been using illegal weapons to dominate and control drug trade, extract money by criminal activities in Rupganj, Sonargaon and nearby areas, Moin said.
The gang has 10 to 15 members who were also involved in robbery and mugging, the Rab official said. They are trying to arrest others, he added.
Riaz studied up to class eight and got involved in criminal activities through his elder brother in 2016.
He was accused in at least 15 cases for murder, attempted murder and other charges.
The four other arrestees are close associates of Riaz.
