‘Casino Samrat’ now gets bail in narcotics case

Alleged casino kingpin and expelled Jubo League leader Ismail Chowdhury Samrat secured bail in a narcotics case on Monday.

He was granted bail after signing a Tk10,000 bail bond.

Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Session Judge Tehsin Iftekhar gave the order.

In the morning, Samrat was brought to the court from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.

On Sunday, Samrat got bail in two cases filed on charges of money laundering and for possessing arms illegally.

A case filed for illegal acquisition of wealth remains the only bar to Samrat’s release from jail.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) found that Samrat had illegally accumulated wealth worth Tk1,000 crore abroad. The anti-graft body is trying to find more information on his wealth, which is still undisclosed.

On October 6, 2019, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Samrat, former president of Dhaka South unit Jubo League following a countrywide crackdown on illegal casinos.

RAB also raided Samrat’s political office in Dhaka’s Kakrail, where he had reportedly been staying since the crackdown began on September 18 that year.

Prior to his arrest, the government imposed a travel ban against him on September 24, 2019.

The elite police unit conducted drives at several establishments where Samrat had either lived or carried out political and business activities.
