Mongol Shobhajatra out to wash away vagaries of the old, welcome new year

Mongol Shobhajatra (procession marking Bangla New Year) was brought out this morning with the intention of dispelling vagaries of the old, and welcoming bright prospects of the new year.

After two years, the Mongol Shobhajatra was brought out in Dhaka University (DU) area at 9am, on the first day of the Bangla year 1429.

This is the first time the procession started from TSC rather than the Faculty of Fine Arts at DU, and it was set to return to TSC after passing by the DU Vice-Chancellor's residence area. This change was made in order to adjust to the ongoing Metro rail project.

The main theme of this year's Mongol Shobhajatra is "Nirmol koro, Mongol koro".

State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid, Vice-Chancellor of DU Prof Dr Akhtaruzzaman, Dean of Faculty of Fine Arts Prof Nisar Hossain, teachers and students of Dhaka University and people from all walks of life were present in the procession.

This year's Mongol Shobhajatra featured four structures: traditional Bengali dolls, fish, bird and horse.

Nisar Hossain told the Daily Star, "The rhythm of our lives was disrupted by Covid-19. The theme of this year's rally was chosen in the hopes of restoring normalcy."
