Workers want wage, festival allowance before Eid

Different workers’ rights bodies on Friday at separate programmes in Bangladesh capital Dhaka called on the government and mills and factory owners to pay wage of workers and festival allowance before the Eid-ul-Fitr.

Sramaik Karmachari Oikya Parishad, a combine of 14 labour rights bodies in a press statement called on the government to pay workers’ wages and festival allowances before Eid-ul-Fitr.

Signatories to the statement were labour leaders Shahidullah Chowdhury, Chowdhury Asikul Alam, Anwar Hossain, Razequzzaman Ratan, Saifuzzaman Badsha, Shamim Ara and others.

Garment Sramik Samhati at a protest rally in front of the National Press Club, demanded full wage of April for the garment workers and festival allowance equal to basic of a month before the Eid.

Taslima Akhter, president of the organisation, who chaired the rally said that the garment factory workers were low-paid so they would not be able to enjoy the Eid festival if they did not get full wage of April.

She also demanded paying workers’ wages and festival allowances by Ramadan 20.

General secretary Julhasnyaneen Babu, central leaders Anjan Das, Babul Hossain and others spoke at the rally.

The rally was followed by a protest procession that paraded different city roads.

Socialist Labour Front at a protest rally in front of the National Press Club also demanded paying wage and festival allowance of the workers before Eid-ul-Fitr.

Vice president of the organisation Abdur Razzak, who chaired the rally said that the workers would not enjoy the Eid festival with their family members if they were not paid wage and festival allowance duly.

General secretary of the organisation Ahsan Habib Bulbul, central leaders Khalequzzaman Lipon, Zulfikar Ali, Selim Mahmud and others also spoke at the rally.

The rally was followed by a protest procession that paraded different city roads.
