New Market clashes: 5 Dhaka College students on 3-day remand

A Dhaka court today placed five Dhaka College students on a three-day remand each in a case filed over assaulting policemen during clashes between students and traders in the capital's New Market area that left two persons dead and scores others wounded.

They are Abdul Kaiyum (24), Polash Mia (24), Mahmood Irfan (24), Foysal Islam (24), and Junaid Bugdadi (19).

Metropolitan Magistrate Tamanna Farah passed the order after Investigation Officer Halder Arpit Thakur, an inspector of New Market Police Station, produced him before the court with a five-day remand prayer.

Earlier in the day, they were shown arrested in the case after an application was submitted in this regard.

In the remand prayer, the IO said all the five along with their accomplices were directly involved with the incidents. So, they need to be remanded to find out vital clues about the incidents, he said.


All the five were earlier arrested from different places for their alleged involvement with the killing of Nahid Mia during the clashes on April 19.

They were later placed on a two-day in connection with the case.

 In the police assault case, Mokbul Hossain, former New Market thana BNP president and current member of the party's Dhaka South unit convening committee, was arrested on April 22.

He was later placed on a three-day remand in the case.
