Nine Bangladeshis jailed over gang rape in India

A special court in India has jailed nine Bangladeshis for different terms for their involvement in a gang rape in Bengaluru last year.

The Special Court 54 on Friday sentenced Chand Miya, Md Rifakdul Islam, Md Alamin Hossien, Rakibul Islam, Md Babu Sheik, Md Dalim and Azim Hossain to life in prison with rigorous punishment, reports The Indian Express.

Two others, Taniya Khan and Md Jamal, were sentenced to 20 years’ and five years’ imprisonment, respectively.

Two other accused received 9 months of simple imprisonment for offences under India’s Foreigners Act, while another was found not guilty.

In May 2021, a video of a woman was being subjected sexual assault in Kanaka Nagar of Bengaluru city went viral on social media.

Union minister Kiren Rijiju made a post on Twitter urging the public to help the police to nab those involved.

Police later arrested 12 individuals in connection with the sexual assault and found that 11 of them had illegally immigrated from Bangladesh.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Bheemashankar Guled said the police had used DNA analysis, mobile forensics, fingerprint evidence and other necessary steps and submitted a chargesheet in 28 days.
