Three to hang for war crimes in Naogaon

The International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced three men to death for crimes committed during the 1971 Liberation War.

A three-member tribunal led by Justice Md Shahinur Islam announce the verdict on Tuesday.

The convicts are Md Rezaul Karim Montu, 68, the former chief of Jamaat-e-Islam’s Naogaon unit, Nazrul Islam, 64, and Md Sahid Mondal, 62.

Among them, Nazrul was tried in absentia.

The convicts have been accused of murders, looting and arson attacks during the war.

According to the case documents, on October 7, 1971, the convicts attacked the Ranahar village in Paharpur union and killed Shaheb Ali, Akam Uddin, Azim Uddin Mandal and Mozaffar Hossain and looted and set fire to around 10-12 houses.

Moreover, the next day, they attacked the Khojagori village in the same union, and killed Md Nurul Islam and set fire to around 15 houses after looting them.

They also tortured Md Kenar Uddin and Md Akkas Ali and tortured them to death, as well as set fire to around 50 houses in Malancha village the same day.

An inquiry was launched against the three on October 13, 2016. During the course of the trial, the tribunal heard 31 witnesses.
