Govt lowers Ctg container depot fire death toll to 41

The authorities on Monday lowered the number of the deaths in the deadly fire at the BM Container Depot at Sitakunda in Bangladesh’s port city of Chattogram to 41.

They said that they mistakenly had announced that a total of 49 people were killed in the fire.

‘There was some counting error. A few bodies were counted doubly. However, we got a total of 41 bodies,’ Chattogram district civil surgeon Elias Chowdhury said.

He said that over 200 people were injured in the fire.

Chattogram Medical College Hospiatl director Brigediar General Shamim Ahsan said that they received a total of 41 bodies.

‘Of the 41 deceased, 22 have been identified and the bodies were handed over to their families. DNA samples are being collected to ascertain the identities of the remaining 19 other unidentified deceased ones,’ he said.

He said that a total of 102 patients were now undergoing treatment in his hospital and many left the hospital after taking first aid.

Meanwhile, firefighters continued their operation on Monday to douse the deadly fire, officials said.
