BNP feels no interest in proposed budget: Fakhrul

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said that his party had no interest in giving any reaction to the national budget for 2022-23 financial year.

‘Every year we respond to the budget, but this year we do not want to do that. The ruling Awami League has no right to announce a budget,’ the BNP leader said.

‘Which budget shall I respond to? Whose budget is this? Who is doing the budget?’ Fakhrul posed a series of questions.

Those who are not representatives of people have no right to prepare and present a budget, argued the leader.

Fakhrul made the remarks in response to a question from reporters at the residence of former BNP lawmaker SA Khaleq as he visited the latter’s house.

He said that those who prepared these budgets would only loot from there.

‘They make an account of how much they will put into their pocket in future. People as well as the whole nation are going through a rough patch as does the BNP,’ Fakhrul explained, adding that now those who were in power by force had taken away all the rights of people in this country.

‘Not only that, the Awami League government has also made this country a kingdom of looters.’

He asserted that the government had put up a huge amount of budget for the new financial year to commit looting only.

‘That is why this budget doesn't matter to me. I do not want to say too much about this,’ he added.

On Thursday, finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal placed a Tk 6,78,064-crore proposed budget for FY23 in the Jatiya Sangsad amid a flurry of challenges including reining in inflation amid an unfavourable global economic situation.

The title of the budget for the new financial year is ‘Return to the Path of Development; Leaving the Covid-19 Behind’.
