Khaleda Zia under close observation

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, who is undergoing treatment at a Dhaka hospital, is under close observation, said her physician and party vice-chairman AZM Zahid Hossain.

‘Khaleda Zia has been kept under close observation for 72 hours since 2:00pm on Saturday. It will be only possible to say about her physical condition tomorrow [Monday] after the period is passed,’ Zahid said.

He said that three blocks were detected in Khaleda Zia’s heart.

‘One of them was critical. It was stented. It is difficult to say now how the other two blocks will behave,’ Zahid said, adding that a team of cardiologists is currently taking care of the 76-year-old former prime minister.

Khaleda was taken to the Evercare Hospital from her Gulshan house on early Saturday after she had complained of chest pain and was admitted to the hospital’s coronary care unit at about 3:00am.

She has long been suffering from various ailments, including liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes and kidney, lung and eye problems.

She was admitted to the hospital for 81 days between November 13, 2021 and February 1, 2022 with the ailments.

Her November 13 admission was only six days after she had returned home from the hospital.

The former prime minister received treatment at the hospital as a patient of its inpatient department several times since March 25, 2020.

BNP demanded the government allow her to travel abroad for advanced treatment but to no avail.
