One sentenced to death, three jailed for life in war crimes case

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Thursday sentenced a war criminal to death and three others to imprisonment until death for committing crimes against humanity at different places under Lakhai upazila in Habiganj during the Liberation War in 1971.

The three-member tribunal led by Justice Md Shahinur Islam pronounced the verdict, said prosecutor Rezia Sultana Chamon.

The death sentence recipient is absconding accused Md Shafi Uddin.

Those who received sentences of imprisonment until death are Tajul Islam, Md Jahed Mia and Salek Mia. They are now behind bars.

The tribunal acquitted another accused, Sabbir Ahmed, as the prosecution failed to prove the charges brought against him. Sabbir faced the trial in absentia.

All of them are inhabitants of Lakhai upazila in Habiganj.

They were tried on two counts of crimes against humanity for committing murders, abduction, torture, torture in confinement, arson attacks and looting during the war of independence.
