Nearly 25km tailback at Dhaka-Tangail highway ahead of Eid

A 25km tailback was reported from the Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge Highway as people rushed to get home ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha holidays.

Passengers suffered on Thursday morning as the tailback continued from the eastern end of Bangabandhu Bridge to Rabna.

According to police, vehicles without fitness are to blame for the traffic jams on the road during Eid.

In a bid to control traffic, the police have turned the two-lane road from Elenga to Bangabandhu Bridge into a one-way road. The north-bound vehicles are going towards the bridge from Elenga while the Dhaka-bound vehicles from the road are entering the capital through Elenga via Bhuyapur.

Cattle trader Delwar Hossain says that the tailback from Sirajganj to Tangail has taken a toll on the animals he was bringing for sale. “If we cannot reach on time, we’ll face huge losses.”

Babu Mia, a truck driver from Dinajpur, said that he got stuck into traffic at Nalka area in Sirajganj around 8pm last night. He was able to reach Kalihati’s Jokar Char area at 7am on Thursday.

According to Bangabandhu Bridge East Police OC Shafiqul Islam some vehicles without fitness broke down on the road causing the tailback.

However, traffic movement will go back to normal as the day progresses, he said.
