Police identify 2 involved in CU student sexual assault

The police claim to have identified two persons involved in the recent sexual assault of a student of Chittagong University.

But their names had been withheld for the sake of investigation, Hathazari model police station OC Ruhul Amin told Bangla Tribune on Friday.

Moreover, the police had yet to make a single arrest over the incident, the OC added.

All the perpetrators would be identified and brought to justice, he said.

CU Vice Chancellor Dr Shireen Akhter also assured that everyone involved in the assault would be punished.

Ashafi Nitu, former general secretary of the CU unit of Bangladesh Students' Union, said she had come across the information that the names of those involved would be disclosed on Sunday.

CU Chhatra League President Rezaul Huq Rubel said: “Irrespective of party affiliation, they should be seen as criminals.” He also demanded that the authorities punish those who had assaulted the CU student.

Acting registrar SM Monirul Hasan said the university had promised the students that the perpetrators would be identified in four working days, and that he would be able to give further information on Sunday.

The sexual assault of the female CU student took place on July 17.

A case was filed in this connection under the Women and Children Repression Prevention (Amendment) Act accusing five unnamed persons.

Amid the furore, fellow students staged demonstrations – first before different dorms of the university and then before the VC resident – from 9pm on Wednesday till 1am on Thursday, pressing home their demand that justice must be ensured over the sexual assault.
