Ganatantra Mancha for greater unity to oust govt

The leaders of the newly-formed political alliance Ganatantra Mancha on Thursday urged all opposition political parties to forge a unity to compel the ruling Awami League government to resign from power.

The Mancha, an alliance of seven political parties, made the call from a rally in front of the National Press Club protesting against the recent fuel price hike.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, JSD president ASM Abdur Rob, said that the Awami League government had no moral right to stay in power as they took away people’s voting rights.

Nagarik Oikya president Mahmudur Rahman Manna, who chaired the event, said that the recent hike in fuel prices would increase the prices of essential commodities and transport fares.

The sufferings of the people will increase more if the Awami League government remains in power, Manna said.

He called on people to come down to the streets for the restoration of democracy and democratic rule in the country.

Ganosamhati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki said that after the resignation of the Awami League government, an interim government would supervise the next general elections in a free, fair, and credible manner.

‘We want a new political agreement under which democracy and the social democratic rule will be established,' Saki said.

The people of the country were eagerly waiting for a change of power and Ganatantra Mancha central leaders would go door-to-door across the country, Saki said.

Revolutionary Workers Party general secretary Saiful Huq called on all the opposition political parties to wage a mass movement against the failures of the government.

Gono Odhikar Parishad member secretary, Nurul Haque Nur, said that the Awami League government would face a mass movement soon and they would be compelled to resign from power.

Bhashani Onusari Parishad convener Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu said that the people were waiting for the restoration of democracy and democratic rule in the country.

Ratra Sanskar Andolan chief coordinator Hasnat Quaiyum said that without reforms of the state operation system and constitution, it would not be possible to give democracy a permanent shape in the country.

JSD vice president Tania Rob, Nagarik Oikya general secretary Shahidullah Kaiser, Ganosamhati executive coordinator Abul Hassan Rubel, Revolutionary Workers Party central leader Akbar Khan, Gono Odhikar Parishad joint convener Muhammad Rashed Khan, and Bhashai Onusari Parishad member secretary Habibur Rahman Riju also spoke at the rally.

The rally was followed by a protest procession that paraded down different roads in the city.

The government on August 5 increased prices of diesel, petrol, octane and kerosene by up to 51 per cent.
