RAB is undergoing reform always: home minister

Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan said on Saturday that the Rapid Action Battalion was always going through reforms and modernisation.

The minister said that they were studying and scrutinising the United States report on the sanction against the RAB.

‘We are checking the report. If anyone had made any mistakes in-person, we have been looking into the matter,’ said Asaduzzaman.

The minister made the remarks while replying to journalists’ queries after attending a programme in the capital.

The minister made the remarks days after the US ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas on September 29 said that sanctions imposed on the RAB and seven of its current and former officials for alleged human rights violations would remain in place until accountability was ensured and reforms were made.

The home minister said, ‘RAB is an elite force. We always put some special tasks on the force. RAB acts as per rules. We are studying the report whether anyone did any mistakes. If anyone had in-person involvement, we are looking into it.’

Rapid Action Battalion’s newly appointed director general M Khurshid Hossain said on Saturday that his force did not need reform as suggested by the United States since the Bangladesh government was countering the sanction on the elite force imposed on December 10, 2021.

‘I do not see any question of making reforms because we are not doing anything for which we need to reform the RAB,’ said Khurshid Hossain on his first day of taking charge of his new responsibility.
