Corruption responsible for grid collapse: BNP

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Wednesday blamed the Awami League government for Tuesday’s massive power supply failure, saying that the power collapse resulted from unplanned projects.

‘The government has been shouting about development. On the other hand, people suffered for eight hours due to blackout,’ BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said while talking with journalists at the house of party standing committee member Iqbal Hasan Mahmud in the capital city.

He said that the Awami League was responsible for this failure.

‘The government has shown that money was spent in the name of power generation. But people of the country saw the blackout,’ he said.

Fakhrul said that the people went through unbearable conditions during the power collapse, adding that such power disasters are not only because of unplanned projects but also due to government corruption.

The sufferings occurred as the government is not accountable, he said, adding that the government has now become a burden for the nation.

‘The government should resign for this. A people’s government should be established through an election under a non-partisan government. The Awami League is now looting everything,’ he said.

Iqbal Hasan Mahmud said that blackouts would increase in the country if the Awami League misrule continued.

‘Such disasters will happen again due to the government looting and mismanagement. The government tactics of fooling people have been revealed. The people have seen that the government does not work, but lies,’ he added.

The BNP leader said that the country’s people would have to pay more due to the lack of planning and mismanagement of the government.

The BNP, he further said, has a master plan, adding that if it comes to power, importance will be given to electrification.

More than 12 crore Bangladeshis suffered due to a vast power collapse for hours from about 2:00pm on Tuesday as the national power grid failed in supplying power.
