BCL attacks Chhatra Adhikar rally remembering Abrar

Over a dozen students were injured as leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League attacked a rally organised by the Bangladesh Chhatra Adhikar Parishad on Dhaka University campus on Friday afternoon.

The BCL leaders and activists attacked the pre-scheduled rally the Raju Memorial while leaders and activists of the Adhikar parishad had been marking the third anniversary of the death of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology student Abrar Fahad.

The event was jointly organised by the BCAP and Abrar Fahad Smrity Sangsad. Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology student Abrar Fahad was beaten to death at his hall by some Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders on October 7, 2019.

As the discussion started, the BCL activists launched attacks from the university’s Teacher-Student Centre, vandalised the chairs and public announcement system, tore the posters and burnt the posters and banners.

They also chased the organisers towards Shahbagh by brandishing chairs and sticks.

The clash left over a dozen injured from both the groups and they were rushed to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital emergency department where a fresh set of clashes broke out.

Bin Yamin Mollah, president of Chhatra Odhikar Parishad told the media that the BCL men attacked their peaceful event.

‘Their attacks left at least 10-12 of our activists,’ he said.

Among others, the BCL central committee organizing secretary Md Nazim Uddin sustained head injuries.

Three Chhatra Adhikar Parishad activists were attacked by the BCL at the DMC while they were talking to the journalists.

They are Sajjad Hossain, Sanaullah and Rakib, all students of the DU and activists of Chhatra Adhikar Parishad.

Sanaullah, central committee member of Chhatra Adhikar said, ‘BCL men have beaten us in front of the journalists and forced us take shelter inside a police car.’

BCL central social affairs sub-committee secretary Tanbir hasan Shaikat blamed the Chhatra Adhikar activists for attacking them.

‘Few of our activists are injured and Chhatra Adhikar launched attacks them as they were receiving medical treatment at the DMCH,’ he said.

Officials at the emergency department of the DMCH said that at least 13 injured ones received treatment at the hospital until 6:45pm.

‘We are looking into the matter and will reveal more at a later time,’ said assistant commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Baha Uddin Bhuiyan he said.
