Cabinet okays draft of NID Registration Act

The Cabinet on Monday has given conditional approval to the draft of the “National Identity Card Registration Act, 2022”, with the provision of issuing the NID after birth.

At the same time, according to this law, the NID services will be transferred from the Election Commission to the Security Services Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The draft was approved in the Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The meeting was held at the Prime Minister's office, said Cabinet Secretary Khondokar Anwarul Islam.

“When this new law will be enacted, newborns will get a unique ID immediately after birth. Later this will be the newborn’s NID card number. However, until the new law is passed, the Election Commission (EC) will act as the authority,” he noted.

The cabinet secretary further mentioned that 32 sections of the act have been reduced to 15.

For a long time, the Ministry of Home Affairs has been trying to get authorization for the NID card management system.

All the services related to NID are now being taken under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
