Over 1.34 lakh memory cards seized at Shahjalal

The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Circle on Friday seized 1,34,400 pieces of illegally imported memory cards from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Bangladesh capital Dhaka.

They also arrested four officials and employees of a courier service company ‘Flybird Express Services’ in this connection.

‘The memory cards have been brought from Hong Kong illegally through a courier service company Flybird Express Services,’ deputy director of the Airfreight Unit of the Customs Investigation Department Sanjeeda Khanom said.

The arrested ones are M Mamun Hossen Mollah, M Tariqul Islam, M Rafiqul Islam and M Kabir Mia.

Meanwhile, the Customs Intelligence team of the Courier Unit took positions at different places of the Import Cargo Complex at the airport under the direction of the director general based-on a tip-off.

At around 9:50am, they entered the storage unit of Flybird Express Services and seized a total of 66 different shaped plastic packets containing memory cards from fabric cartons.

Of these recovered cards, about 43,000 pieces of 8GB memory card, 33,500 pieces of 16GB memory card, 52,500 pieces of 32GB memory card, and 5,400 pieces of 64GB memory card were seized from the plastic bags.

These illegal devices were imported from Hong Kong showing false declaration and then these illegally imported cards were recovered in presence of all the agencies including Dhaka Customs and intelligence department, said the official.

These illegal items have already been submitted to the customs house for taking necessary legal action.

‘A case was filed with the Airport Police Station and four detained courier employees were handed over to the police’, Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s additional deputy commissioner (Airport Zone) Taposh Kumar Das said.
