3 airports to remain closed over cyclone Sitrang

Three airports including two international and one domestic will remain closed due to the heavy rainfall and upcoming cyclone Sitrang.

The airports are - Shah Amanat International Airport, Cox's Bazar Airport, and Barisal airport.

The airports will be closed after 3pm on Monday and are expected to open at 12pm on Tuesday, says a NOTAB issued by the airport apex body Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) on Monday.

Talking with Dhaka Tribune, CAAB Wing Commander M Farhad Hossain Khan, director of Shah Amanat International Airport, said: “We have decided to take the initiative due to the weather. Chittagong Airport will remain closed for cyclone Sitrang till Tuesday.”

Cox's Bazar Airport Assistant Director (ATM)- Supervisor CAAB Golam Mortoza Hossain said: “We have to shut our operations due to the heavy rainfall.”

Meanwhile, Executive Director of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Muhammed Kamrul Islam said they are following the weather updates and will take steps accordingly.

He further said that all operations have been going smoothly so far.

Cyclone Sitrang formed over the east-central Bay of Bengal late on Sunday evening.

This is the first big storm that has developed in the Bay of Bengal in the month of October since 2018. Sitrang will track after Cyclone Asani, which formed in the Bay of Bengal in early May this year.

It may cross the Bangladeshi coast by early Tuesday.
