HC bench declines to hear petition of journalist Kanak Sarwar’s sister

A High Court bench on Tuesday declined to hear a petition filed by Nusrat Shahrin Raka, sister of journalist Kanak Sarwar, against the proceedings in two cases filed against her under the Digital Security Act.

The bench of justice ASM Abdul Mobin and SM Masud Hossain Dolan dropped Nusrat’s petition from the list of hearing and advised her lawyer AJ Mohammad Ali to move the petition before another bench saying that one of the judges was embarrassed to hear the petition.

On June 1, Nusrat filed the petition with the High Court challenging the lower court’s May 17 order to frame charges against her in the DSA case.

On March 14, another High Court bench granted her ad-interim bail until the completion of her trial in two DSA cases and observed that Nusrat might have been implicated in the DSA case because of her journalist brother Kanak Sarwar.

The Rapid Action Battalion filed the cases against her under the Digital Security Act and Narcotic Substance Act for criticising prime minister Sheikh Hasina and some other ministers, and allegedly for carrying illegal drug Crystal Meth at the time of her arrest on October 5, 2021.

The DSA case accused Nusrat of defaming the prime minister, other ministers of her cabinet and other important personalities by posting ‘slanderous remarks’ on her Facebook page.
