Election won't be successful without govt cooperation, says CEC

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal today said the national elections will not be successful without government cooperation.

"With government's cooperation, the election will be more successful. The election won't be fair by a show of power on the streets, rather we have to come to the election field and create balance through healthy competition," the CEC said while talking to reporters at the Election Commission today.

If parties do not ensure balance with candidates and agents at centres, it won't be possible to hold a fair and credible election simply with the help of police or military.

Kazi Habibul Awal said, "There is no dialogue between the political parties at all...but that needs to happen..."

The CEC also said he wanted to send a message to political leaders in the current situation.

"I do not believe there will be a healthy election by showing off power on the streets. All parties are trying to say they will meet on the streets, that there will be a test of strength on the streets...It will not be a truly democratic election if that is the case," the CEC added.
