Transport strike threatened in Rajshahi div ahead of Dec 3 BNP rally

Leaders of the transport owners’ association in Rajshshi on Saturday threatened to enforce an indefinite strike in eight districts of the division from December 1 ahead of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s divisional rally in Rajshshi, scheduled to be held on December 3.

Rajshahi Divisional Road Transport Owners Association president Safkat Manjur Biplob made the announcement at a press conference in a community centre in Natore district town.

He said that they had decided to keep all kinds of transport services suspended in all the eight districts of the division for an indefinite period since December 1 if their eleven-point demands were not met by November 30.

The demands include amendment to the Road Transport Act-2018, a ban on unauthorised three-wheelers on the highway and an end to ‘administrative hassle’.

BNP has so far organised eight rallies in the headquarters of its organisational divisions. Of them, there was no transport strike during divisional rallies in Chattogram, Mymensingh and Cumilla.

So far, the BNP has organised divisional rallies in Khulna, Rangpur, Barishal, Sylhet and Faridpur where party leaders and activists encountered formidable obstacles, including transport strikes and police cases, to join the programmes.
