Accident on DU campus: Students demand ex-teacher’s punishment

A section of Nirapad Sarak Chai (We Demand Safe Roads), Dhaka University unit, today held a protest rally over the death of a woman, who was hit by a private car on DU campus and dragged around a kilometre yesterday.

At the rally held near Raju Bhashkarja on the campus around 11:00am, they demanded safe campus and exemplary punishment of Azhar Jafar Shah, former assistant professor of the International Relations department of DU, who was behind the wheel during the accident.

Rifat Jahan Shaon, convener of the organisation's DU unit, said, "We feel unsafe on the campus as heavy vehicles run through the area. We can even hear the sound of these vehicles when we are in the library. We raised the demand (to stop movement of heavy vehicles though the campus) several times but the authorities did not pay any heed."

Some DU students will start a sit-in in front of the vice chancellor's residence from 2:00pm to press home their demand.
