A joyous homecoming turns into tragedy

At least five persons died and several others were injured in three-way collision in Habiganj early today.

All the dead were passengers of a microbus that was carrying an expat and his relatives to Moulvibazar from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, said police.

The deceased were identified as microbus driver Sabir Ali, Atikur Rahman, Abdus Salam, Sadia and her two-year-old daughter.

Jasim Uddin, an inspector of Sherpur Highway Police Station, said the collision involving the microbus, a human-haulier and truck took place in Shayestaganj area on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway around 3:30am.

The Bangladeshi expatriate in Malaysia, Raju Ahmed and at least two of his relatives are receiving treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, Ashraful Mamun, a cousin of Raju, told our Moulvibazar correspondent.

Eight relatives, including Atikur and Salam, received Raju at Dhaka airport and were returning to their village home in Moulvibazar on the microbus, he said.
