BERC recommends 15pc hike in retail power tariff

The technical evaluation committee of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has recommended raising retail electricity price by 15 percent.

It presented the proposal to the members of the commission at a public hearing at BIAM Auditorium in the capital today.

The weighted average tariff charged per kilowatt hour by different power companies is Tk 7.13. It is being proposed that this should rise to Tk 8.23.

Also under consideration by the commission is the question of whether existing government subsidies will remain intact as the tariff is hiked.

The committee also proposed that the commission consider the metro rail authorities as a special consumer deserving of reduced rates.

Meanwhile Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Ltd proposed that the transmission charge be doubled by as much as 120 percent to be effective from February 2023.
