AL speaks indecorous as they see fall: BNP

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party said Thursday that the ruling Awami League was making impertinent statements as it became certain of its collapse.

‘When their [AL] fall is clear, visible, they are making impertinent comments,’ BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a press conference at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office.

Fakhrul was responding to the remark of prime minister Sheikh Hasina that nobody could oust AL from power and the government to go tough if BNP went for a tough programme.

Fakhrul alleged that the government had become desperate to suppress opposition parties, frightened by their ongoing movement.

Referring to Wednesday’s attacks by the police and the ruling AL on opposition activists at various places, including Faridpur and Mymensingh, during the mass sit-in programme, he said that it meant the government had no ground under its feet.

The government is in a daze, scared, very scared, and they are carrying out these attacks,’ he said.

‘We do not respond to many of the words of the prime minister. When she says, people do not understand what she is saying for what purpose, so we feel there is no need to answer her,' said Fakrul.

Fakhrul alleged that the armed leaders and activists of the ruling party and law enforcers attacked BNP people in Faridpur and Mymensingh during the mass sit-in programme.

He said that police had filed a case against BNP people while BNP supporters were injured in Faridpur.

Fakhrul said that on January 16, rallies and processions would be held in all cities and upazilas across the country to press home their 10-point demand and decrease the price of electricity.

BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan, vice-chairmen Abdul Awal Mintoo and Ahmed Azam Khan, chairperson advisory council member Aman Ullah Aman, organising secretaries Syed Emran Saleh Prince, Shyama Obaid, joint organising secretary Shariful Alam and assistant public education secretary Anisur Rahman Talukder Khokon were present at the press conference, among others.
