6 killed as ambulance crashes into truck in Shariatpur

At least six people, including a patient, were killed when an ambulance crashed into a truck in Jazira upazila of Shariatpur early today.

The deceased were identified as Jahanara Begum, 55, her daughter Lutfun Nahar Lima, 20, their relative and health worker Fazle Rabbi, 28, ambulance driver Rabiul Islam, 29, his associate Jilani, 28, and Barishal Bureau Chief of Daily Nabochatona Md Masud Rana.

A Dhaka-bound ambulance from Shariatpur rammed into a CNG-run truck from behind at Shariatpur underpass, 400 metres off Padma bridge, around 4:20am, due to poor visibility caused by dense fog, said Md Selim Miah, deputy director of the district's Fire service and Civil Defence.

The ambulance was taking the patient to Dhaka's Neuroscience Hospital, our Shariatpur correspondent reports quoting the fire service official.

The patient, ambulance driver and helper were among the deceased, he said adding that their identities could not be known immediately.
