HC asks why govt officials not eligible for polls right after retirement

The High Court has issued a ruling seeking to know why the provision of not allowing government officials to participate in the national elections right away should not be declared illegal.

Currently, a government official has to wait at least three years after retirement before participating in national polls.

A division bench of the High Court issued the ruling on the preliminary hearing of a writ petition on Thursday.

Chief Election Commissioner, law ministry secretary, home ministry secretary, public administration ministry secretary, local government ministry secretary and Lalmonirhat deputy commissioner have been asked to respond to the rule within four weeks.

Earlier, the writ was filed in the High Court challenging the provision of not allowing government officials to participate in the National Assembly elections right after retirement.

The writ was filed by retired military officer Brigadier General Md Shamim Kamal.
