Mayor Atiq senses mosquito-killing method wrong

Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Atiqul Islam said on Saturday that he had realised that the methods of killing mosquitoes in Dhaka city were wrong while observing the mosquito-eradication programme at Miami in the United States of America.

The north city authority shared the mayor’s realisation with the media through a press release issued on the day as Atiq is currently leading a 16-member delegation at a workshop in the United States.

‘We have used wrong methods. Mosquitoes were not destroyed, but money was wasted. We want to establish a laboratory for identifying the species of mosquitoes,’ the release said, quoting Atiqul.

‘We want to keep the DNCC mosquito-free through implementing knowledge acquired from Miami.’

The mayor added that they would organise a virtual meeting with the US authorities engaging Bangladeshi entomologists.

‘We will also sketch a work plan so that we can implement that in Dhaka,’ he said, adding that they would concentrate on larviciding than fogging.

‘The weather condition in Dhaka and Miami is same. We will succeed as they did. Now there is no time to lag behind.’

A DNCC delegation led by the mayor is visiting Florida at the invitation and funding of the Commercial Law Development Programme of the US Department of Commerce, according to the release.

Atiqul left for the USA on January 14 and is scheduled to return on January 27.
