KNF member killed in Bandarban gunfight

The police recovered a Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF) member's body on Sunday from the remote hilly area of Ruma upazila of Bandarban.

The KNF member, who is yet to be identified, was killed in a gunfight with law enforcement agencies, said Md Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Ruma police station.

The body was recovered from a place between Artha Para and Bachlong Para of Ruma upazila at around 11am, he said.

OC Alamgir said the shootout between the separatist group and law enforcement officials began on Saturday. Hearing the sound of firing, 40 families of the Marma community from Mulpi Para in Paindu union fled the village and took shelter in the Marma Welfare Association building at Ruma Bazar.

Later on Sunday morning, police conducted a raid around the site and found the body, said the OC.

“Since October 17 last year, joint forces have been conducting operations in the hills, due to which the KNF members have scattered and were staying in the remote locations along the border in Ruma upazila. There have been incidents of firing recently. Terrified by their presence, residents of different neighbourhoods left their homes and moved to shelters,” he added.
