ASK condemns BCL tortures at universities

Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK), a leading rights organisation, today condemned and expressed concern over the incidents of physical and mental torture of university students carried out allegedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League members.

The ASK in a statement said a female student of Islamic University, Kushtia, was tortured and undressed allegedly by BCL activists at a dormitory on February 12 as she did not comply with their orders. A death threat was also issued to the female student.

Four fourth-year students of Chattogram Medical College were beaten in a room on the second floor of the main dormitory on February 8 and two of them were taken to a cabin from the intensive care unit (ICU) on February 14. The BCL men have allegedly threatened the two students at the hospital, ASK said in the statement.

The organisation said BCL leaders of Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall of Rajshahi University allegedly confined a student and tortured him physically and mentally on February 12. They also threatened to kill him as he was involved with the politics of Islami Chhatra Shibir.

It said in the statement that such grave allegations have been brought against Chhatra League men in the past too, and such incidents of continuous harassment, attack and threatening general students are very heinous. The incidents also are tarnishing the environment of education.

In the statement, ASK urged the authorities concerned to take political and institutional actions after such incidents.
