IU ragging: Chhatra League leader leaves campus, suspended from organization

The High Court directed Islamic University (IU) Chhatra League Vice President Shanjida Chowdhury Ontora and her associate Tabassum to leave the university hall over the torture of Fulpori Khatun, a first-year student at the university, in the name of ragging.

They left the hall Thursday evening, confirmed provost of Deshratna Sheikh Hasina Hall Prof Dr Shamsul Alam.

In this regard, University Proctor Professor Dr Shahadat Hossain Azad said: “According to the instructions of the High Court, I informed the hall provost about the two accused leaving the hall. Besides, I have instructed the OC of IU police station for the safety of the victim girl and the law administrator has been asked for a judicial investigation.”

The Chhatra League has exempted the Vice President of the Chhatra League Shanjida Chowdhury Ontara from all kinds of organizational activities until the investigation report is received, said branch BCL President Faisal Siddiqui Arafat.

The incident surfaced after the victim left the hall and disclosed the matter to her seniors and her family members on Monday.

The victim on Tuesday submitted a complaint to the university proctor, student adviser and the hall provost, demanding punishment for those involved in the incident.

Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling Awami League, formed a panel to probe into the ragging.

The university authorities also formed a five-member investigation committee earlier on Wednesday.

The High Court on Thursday ordered the formation of a three-member investigation committee over the incident.
