6 injured as BCL, JCD men clash in Jhenidah

Six people were injured in a clash between activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) after they placed wreaths at the Shaheed Minar in Jhenidah's Kaliganj upazila on the occasion of International Mother Language Day.

BCL activist Erfan Reza and Al Amin, general secretary of Kaliganj union unit JCD, the student wing of BNP, are among the injured.

Erfan was referred to Jashore Medical College Hospital.

According to police and witnesses, BCL men started pelting brick chunks when they came face to face with JCD activists at the Shaheed Minar on the premises of Government Mahtab Uddin College around 7:30am.

Later, BNP activists also threw brick chunks at BCL men, triggering the clash.

Saiful islam Firoz, senior joint secretary of Central Swechchhasebak Dal, said BCL members attacked JCD men and also hurled crude bombs at them, leaving five people injured

Organising Secretary of Kaliganj municipality Awami League Ashraful Alam said BNP men attacked Erfan and injured him.

After police brought the situation under control, AL activists ransacked the counter of Purbasha Paribhaban, which is owned by Swechchhasebak Dal leader Firoz's friend Khaled Saifullah Milon.

Contacted, Kaliganj Officer-in-Charge Rahim Molla said he could not comment as he was at a rally.
