Police on Friday arrested two transport workers—a driver and his assistant– with 1.6 lakh pieces of yaba tablets, one firearm and 40 rounds of bullets from Chunati area under Lohagara upazila in Chattogram.

The arrestees are covered van driver Md Farid Mia, 25, son of Nuru Uddin, of Tarakanda area in Mymensingh and his assistant Md Nur Hossain Sabuj, 27, son of Shamsul Hoque, from Jorargonj area in Mirsharai in Chattogram, said Kabir Ahmed, additional superintendent (admin) of Chattogram district police.

Lohagara police arrested them at a check post at Chunati area on early Friday, he said.

‘We recovered a total of 1.6 lakh pieces of Yaba tablets which were hidden under the driving seat after making an extra box and a pistol and 40 rounds of bullets,’ he said.

‘They were carrying arms to protect the yaba pills which were being transported to Dhaka from Cox’s Bazar,’ he added.

Lohagara police filed two cases against them on charge of drug dealing and using illegal firearm, he said.

Lohagara police station’s officer-in-charge Md Atiqur Rahman told New Age that they used the covered van–R.B Traders– for transporting yaba to avoid attention of the law enforcement agencies.

‘We are trying to arrest others involved in the drug dealing,’ he added.
