RU students postpone protest to give authorities scope to take action

Rajshahi University students, who were involved in prolonged clashes with locals and police on Saturday, today postponed their protest programme at the campus.

The students said they postponed the movement to give the university authorities scope to take action against those responsible for the violence of Saturday night, reports our Rajshahi staff correspondent.

Yesterday afternoon, the protesting students gave the authorities a 24-hour ultimatum, which will end at 2:00pm, to meet their five-point demand, Abdul Mazid Antor, coordinator of RUCSU Andolon Mancha, said.

"After the ultimatum ends, we will ask the administration about their actions taken to fulfil our demands. Then, we will discuss with student leaders to decide on our next course of actions".

Heavy vehicles were avoiding the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway that goes through the main gate of the campus and Binodpur bazar.

However, auto-rickshaws and small vehicles were plying the area.

Heavy contingents of the police were deployed at Talaimari, Kajla, Maingate and Binodpur points.

The police's Crisis Response Team was also found deployed.

On Saturday, students' clashes with locals and police left 220, including two policemen, injured.

The RU students began a sit-in demonstration yesterday in front of the university administration office, protesting the cops' use of firearms during the incident and the administration's failure to handle the situation.

Later, they withdrew the protest programme after the officials promised to meet their demands of withdrawal of the proctor, ensuring justice for the students, treatment of the injured students and safety on campus.
