Two buses set on fire as their competition leaves motorcyclist killed

Angry people set fire to two buses after a motorcyclist was killed in a road accident during the completion of the buses to overtake each-other on Ashulia-EPZ Road at Jirabo under Savar upazila in Dhaka on Sunday morning.

The deceased was Mehedi Hasan, 32, a resident of Dhaka’s Demra area and a local sales representative of an electronic company.

The accident took place at Jirabo at about 7:30am and agitated people then vandalized and torched two buses of Ali Noor Paribahan that were involved in the accident, Jirabo Fire station’s station officer Kabir Hossain said.

Masud Al Mamun, sub-inspector of Ashulia police station, said that the motorcyclist was killed when a Abdullapur-bound passenger bus of Ali Noor Paribahan ran over him.

The accident took place during competition of two buses of Ali Noor Paribahan. The buses were set on fire by enraged people, said the police officer.

Following the torching, two firefighting units arrived there and put out the fire.

The incident caused huge traffic gridlock in the morning and the buses were later taken off the road to ensure regular traffic movement.
