Former Home Minister Altaf Hossain’s motorcade attacked in Patuakhali

Former Home Minister and central BNP vice-president Altaf Hossain Chowdhury's motorcade came under attack by miscreants in Mirzaganj upazila of Patuakhali today.

Three people, including Mirzaganj Upazila Parishad's vice-chairman Hasina Begum, were injured in the attack that took place in Subidkhali Bazar area around 11:00am, claimed the upazila BNP president Shahabuddin Nannu.

Of the injured, two local Chhatra Dal men Al-Amin and Nazmul Mridha were admitted to the upazila health complex while Hasina Begum was given first aid, Nannu told our Patuakhali correspondent.

Nannu said a group of unidentified criminals carried out the attack when Altaf Hossain along with party men was going to take part in a sit-in-programme in Mirzaganj from Kathaltali. The event was organised as part of the BNP's central programme.

The attackers vandalised several motorcycles and a microbus, he added.

Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Mirzaganj Police Station, said there was no such attack on the rally venue. But someone vandalised a microbus on the way of Altaf Hossain. Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

However, the sit-in programme finally was held at the Upazila Judicial Magistrate's Court premises.

BNP announced to hold a two-hour sit-in programme from 2:00pm to 4:00pm today at the thana and upazila levels of all metropolitan cities including the capital Dhaka.

The party held the event to protest the increase in prices of electricity and gas, the "blanket corruption" of the Awami League government and to push for the 10-point demand for restoration of democracy and the resignation of the government.
