BCL activists assault DSA protesters in Mangal Shobhajatra

Leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League on Friday allegedly assaulted left-leaning student activists who displayed placards reading their demands including the repeal of the Digital Security Act during the Mangal Shobhajatra on Dhaka University campus.

At this time, the leaders of the left-leaning student organisations alleged that the activists of the Chhatra League of Fine Arts Faculty vandalised their placards after attacking them.

The incident took place in front of Dhaka University’s Faculty of Fine Arts on Friday morning.

‘Mangal Shobhayatra cannot be happened by ignoring our basic rights. From the procession, we wanted to express our demands, and our thoughts through placards. But later the activists of Chhatra League attacked us and vandalised our placards,’ Samajtantrik Chhatra Front president Mukta Barai said.

Bangladesh Students’ Union private university unit president Reshmi Saba and general secretary Tanjimur Rahman Rafi, in a joint statement, strongly protested against the BCL attack on Mangal Shobhajatra and said, ‘the boat of communalism is floating’.

After starting the Mangal Shobhajatra, the Students’ Union began collecting signatures for the cancellation of DSA.

The organization alleged that the DU Proctorial Team obstructed them.

Neither the president nor the general secretary of the DU unit of BCL could be reached for the comments after several attempts.

DU proctor Professor Maksudur Rahman said, ‘We did not stop them. I told them that I needed to be informed in advance about such a signature collection program. I didn’t even ask them to go away.’
