25 injured as passenger train hits freight train in Cumilla

At least 25 people were injured as seven compartments and the locomotive of a passenger train were derailed after hitting a standing freight train at Hasanpur area in Cumilla on Sunday evening.

The movement of trains on the Chattogram-Dhaka route remained halted for around two hours till filing this report at about 9:00pm.

Jashim Uddin, officer-in-charge of Laksham railway police station, said that they rescued two persons with severe injuries and sent them to a local hospital.

‘At least 25 persons received minor injuries in the accident that occurred at about 7:00pm,’ he said.

At that time, a freight train was standing at Hasanpur rail station of Nangolcot area in Cumilla, he said.

He also said that the Sonar Bangla Express hit the freight train from behind on its way to Dhaka from Chattogram.

Following the collision, he said, seven compartments of Sonar Bangla Express derailed immediately.

‘Train movement on the Dhaka-Chattogram route is continuing while train movement on the Chattogram-Dhaka route is halted now,’ he added.
