Attack on Hasina's motorcade in Satkhira: Ex-BNP MP, 3 others get life term

Four people, including former BNP lawmaker Habibul Islam Habib were sentenced to life imprisonment in two cases filed over the 2002 attack on the motorcade of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was opposition leader at the time, in Satkhira.

Forty-four others were sentenced to seven years in jail in the cases filed under arms and explosive substances acts.

Satkhira Special Tribunal-3 Judge Biswanath Mondal pronounced the verdict around 10:15am today, said Satkhira Judge's Court Additional Advocate Faizul Haque.

The three others sentenced to life imprisonment in the two case are: Upazila Jubo Dal President Kader Bachchu, Kalaroa Municipal Jubo Dal President Arifur Rahman Ronju and former Chhatra Dal president Ripon, he said.

Thirty-seven of the 48 accused are in jail. Of them, 34, including Habib, were present in the court today, the lawyer said, adding that three of the accused could not be produced before the court as they were ill.

Among the two accused who were on bail, Abdus Sattar was present at the court while Abdus Samad did not appear before the court.

Nine other accused remain absconding while two other accused died in prison.

According to the case statement, Hasina's convoy came under attack from some BNP men at the order of the then lawmaker Habibul Islam Habib in Kalaroa upazila while she was visiting the district on August 30 in 2002.

On February 4 of 2021, 50 people, including Habib, were jailed for different terms in another case filed over the attack.
