Eid journey: Traffic on Bangabandhu Bridge doubles

Number of vehicles has increased on the Dhaka-Tangail highway and on the Bangabandhu Bridge link road in Tangail today, as people started leaving Dhaka and adjacent districts to celebrate Eid-ul-fitr with their near and dear ones.

On the Bangabandhu Bridge, the number of private vehicles, like private cars, microbuses and motorcycles, was higher than public transport vehicles today.

A total of 30,251 vehicles crossed the Bangabandhu Bridge in the 24 hours till 6:00am today, Ahsanul Kabir Pavel, executive engineer of Bangabandhu Bridge site office of Bangladesh Bridge Authorities.

The bridge authorities collected Tk 2.44 crore toll during that period, reports our Tangail correspondent quoting Ahsanul Kabir.

On an average day, 12,000 to 15,000 vehicles of 22 districts cross the bridge every day. The number of vehicles increase by two to threefold during the Eid.

Sergeant Mushfiqur Rahman of Tangail Traffic Department, who was on duty at Elenga, said around noon that the rush on the link road reduced as the day progressed.

"People might be avoiding the scorching heat and sunlight. The pressure of vehicles may increase again from the afternoon," he said.

Earlier, a tailback was created on the Bangabandhu Bridge link road following sehri after a passenger bus broke down near 11 number bridge of the road, said Jahid Hasan, in-charge of Elenga Highway Police Outpost.

Normal vehicular movement resumed after the bus was removed from the highway around 6:00am, he said.

On the other hand, hundreds of motorcycles were seen at the toll plaza on the eastern side of the Bangabandhu Bridge in the morning.

The bridge authorities said this time two separate toll booths were set up at the either end of the bridge for motorcycles.
