Shawwal moon sighted, Eid on Saturday across Bangladesh

Eid-ul-Fitr, the biggest religious festivals of the Muslims, will be celebrated in Bangladesh on Saturday as the moon for the month of Shawwal could be sighted in the sky of the country on Friday evening.

The National Moon-Sighting Committee made the announcement after a meeting on Friday evening, according to religious affairs ministry officials.

The meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee was held at the Islamic Foundation’s conference room at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.

State minister for religious affairs Mohammad Faridul Haque Khan, also president of the committee, presided over the meeting.

The main Eid jamaat at the capital’s National Eidgah will be held at 8:30am on Saturday, according to a press release of the Dhaka South City Corporation issued on Thursday.

The release also said that the main jamaat might take place at 9:00am at the national mosque Baitul Mukarram if it could not arrange at National Eidgah due to rough weather.

‘The law enforcement agencies are working to ensure fool proof security for the main Eid jamaat,’ DSCC mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh told reporters after visiting the National Eidgah.

He hoped that the president, cabinet members, secretaries and diplomats would join the jamaat.

He said that a total of 35,000 devotees could attend prayers at National Eidgah beside the Supreme Court.

At least five Eid jamaats will be held at the national mosque Baitul Mukarram in Dhaka beginning from 7:00am. The last jamaat will be held at 10:45am, according to the Islamic Foundation press release on Wednesday.

Eid jamaat at historic Azipmpur Dayera Sharif Jame Mosque will be held at 10:00am, said a release.
