Lightning strikes kill 9

Nine people including two teenagers died today while two others were injured after being struck by lightning in different areas of Sunamganj, Moulvibazar and Sylhet districts.

The incidents, nine in total, took place between 10:00am and 11:00am amidst heavy rain.

According to locals, eight of the deceased were struck by lightning while they were working on farmlands.

Six people, including two teenagers, died while two others were injured in three separate incidents in Sunamganj's Chhatak, Dowarabazar and Tahirpur upazilas, said Ripon Kumar Modok, additional superintendent of Sunamganj district police.

The deceased were identified as Mahim Miah, 18, of Paschim Debergaon village, Arosh Ali, 58, of Paschim Barakapon village and Abdus Samad, 25, of Charmahalla village in Chhatak upazila; Tara Miah, 30, of Ranbhumi village and Milon Miah, 14, of Fatepur village in Dowarabazar upazila; and Ramzan Ali, 16, of Kukurkandi village in Tahirpur upazila.

The injured are Mukid Miah, 25, of Tahirpur and Nizam Uddin, 30, of Dowarabazar. They were sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Two others were killed similarly in Moulvibazar's Sreemangal and Kamalganj upazilas.

The deceased were identified as Riaz Uddin, 22 of Lalbag village in Sreemangal upazila and Shom Shabdakar, 42, of Uttar Tilakpur village in Kamalganj upazila, confirmed Jahangir Sarder, officer-in-charge of Sreemangal Police Station and Sanjay Debnath of Kamalganj Police Station.

Ansar Ali of Mohammadpur village in Balaganj upazila also died after being struck by lightning in Sylhet, confirmed Ramaprashad Chakrobarty, officer-in-charge of Balaganj Police Station.
