Five members of a family, including children aged eight and three years, suffered burn injuries after a CNG-run auto-rickshaw caught fire in Chattogram's Bakalia area today.
The family were travelling on the auto-rickshaw to visit relatives on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, said police.
The injured -- Bilkis Begum, 28, Josna Begum, 28, Sathi Akter, 17, Jannat, 08, and Kainat, 3 -- were admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital's burn unit, Bakalia Police Station's Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdur Rahim told The Daily Star.
"The five boarded the CNG-run auto-rickshaw from Karnaphuli area and headed for Bahaddarhat area to visit relatives for Eid. Around 12:30pm, when the auto-rickshaw arrived at Notun Bridge Gol Chattar area it suddenly caught fire, burning the five, " the OC added.
Later, the gas cylinder of the CNG-run auto-rickshaw exploded, he said.
Locals doused the flame and rushed the injured to CMCH hospital, the police official added. Police took the auto-rickshaw to the police station.
SI Nurul Alam Ashek, CMCH police outpost in-charge, said all were admitted to the CMCH burn unit around 1:00pm.
