Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen has said that the national elections are eight months away and journalists need not be worried or talk much about it.

“You speak too much about it and make the foreigners speak. Please don't do it. We are committed to free and fair elections,” he told journalists at a media briefing at the foreign ministry on Monday.

He was responding to a question if Dhaka can fulfil foreign countries' desire for free and fair elections in Bangladesh.

“We want free and fair elections. The US wants it. Others also want it. We have established the institutions that are required for free and fair elections,” he said.

AK Abdul Momen said, “All parties need to be sincere so that there is no violence. All parties need to make a commitment to free and fair elections. If all parties want, there is no reason why there will not be free and fair ones.”

Momen said in the last fourteen years, 1,500 elections were held in Bangladesh. At the micro level, there might be some irregularities and all countries have some irregularities, he said.

He said the Awami League government has made a lot of progress in social and economic spheres. It stood by the low-income groups. The businesses and government officials are also happy.
