Rain likely as monsoon sets over Bangladesh

The monsoon is fairly active and rain is likely to occur across the country, Bangladesh Meteorological Department said in its weather forecast today.

"Southwest monsoon has set over Bangladesh. Monsoon is fairly active over Bangladesh and weak to moderate over the north Bay," the Met office said.

The day and night temperatures may fall slightly, it added.

"Light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely at many places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna and Sylhet divisions and at a few places over Chattogram and Barishal divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places over the country," the Met office said in the morning bulletin.

Meteorologist AKM Nazmul Haque told that, "A squally wind speed may reach 45-60 kmph over Rangpur, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Pabna, Bogura, Tangail, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram and Sylhet regions by 6:00pm today."

So, the river ports in the areas have been asked to hoist cautionary signal number 1, he said.

Meteorologist Md Bazlur Rashid told that, "Usually, the southwest monsoon spreads across the country between June 1 and 15. It has been seen that the monsoon has already come in Bangladesh. However, at the beginning of the monsoon, it rains for two-three days in a row, but it is not happening this time.

"As a result, it is expected that there may be less rain than normal in the month of June," he added.

The normal rainfall in June is 459.4mm, he also said.

"We have seen unusual weather conditions even before monsoon. The temperature was very high. But this cannot be said to be an isolated incident, we have received information about unusual weather in many other countries."
