Mother and daughter stabbed to death at Noakhali home

A woman and her daughter were stabbed to death by unidentified criminals inside their house in Noakhali Sadar upazila this morning.

The deceased were identified as Nur Nahar Begum, 45, wife of Fazle Azim Kochi and their daughter Fatema Azim Priyonti, 16.

The incident took place around 10:30am at Guptanko Barlington Intersection area in the municipality, said Mizanur Rahman Pathan, inspector (investigation) of Sudharam Police Station.

Police and locals said the attackers entered the two-storey building and stabbed Nur Nahar to death inside their flat on the first floor. As Priyonti screamed for help, they also stabbed her, leaving her critically injured. She died on the way to hospital.

Hearing the screams, local rushed there and captured one Altaf Hossain. They handed him over to police, the inspector said.

Hailing from Ramgati upazila in Lakshmipur, Altaf, a Bangladeshi expatriate in Oman, arrived in the country a week ago. Police are interrogating him, Inspector Mizanur said.

Talking to our Noakhali correspondent, Nur Nahar's husband Fazle Azim said Altaf visited their house yesterday to rent a flat on the ground floor. He was supposed to come to the house to pay the advance money.

After being detained by locals, Altaf claimed himself innocent saying he went to the flat to pay the advance money and saw the two victims lying in a pool of blood.

The motive behind the killing could not be known immediately. Police are investigating the incident, Inspector Mizanur said.
