468 killed in road accidents throughout country in May

Four hundred and sixty-eight people died and 769 others suffered injuries in 496 road accidents in the country in May.

During the period, 43 people died and seven people injured in 50 railway accidents, according to latest data of Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh.

Additionally, 16 people were killed, eight injured and three missing in 18 accidents on the waterway, the association revealed the data in a press release today.

The data has been prepared by the association's "monitoring cell" based on news reports published in national, regional and online newspapers, says the release signed by its Secretary General Mozammel Haque Chowdhury.

The data shows that out of the total road crashes, 185 motorcycle accidents claimed lives of 181 people and injured 114 people accidents last month.

Motorcycle accidents account for 37.29 percent of total road accidents in May and casualties from motorcycle accidents is 38.67 percent of total deceased from road accidents, it adds.

Of the total road crashes, 26.81 percent happened on national highways, 35.88 percent on regional highways, and 30.04 percent on feeder roads.

In May, the highest 121 road accidents took place in Dhaka division, resulting in deaths of 110 people and injuring another 151 people.

On the other hand, the lowest 24 road accidents took place in Sylhet division resulting in deaths of 28 people and injuring 62 people, it further says.

People died from road accidents in May included drivers (137), pedestrians (83), and transport workers (30).
