Woman dies after newborn’s death due to ‘wrong treatment’

Mahbuba Rahman Akhi, who was in critical condition and lost her newborn baby allegedly for doctors’ negligence and wrong treatment at Central Hospital, died at the capital’s Labaid Specialised Hospital on Sunday.

Akhi died at about 2:00pm, confirmed Md Shamim, a family member of the victim.

Her condition deteriorated after giving birth to the child at the Central Hospital at Green Road in Dhaka on June 10, allegedly for doctors’ negligence, and she was shifted to the Labaid Specialised Hospital on the same day.

Earlier, Central Hospital’s physicians Shahjadi and Muna, who were arrested on Wednesday night in a case filed over the newborn’s death by Akhi's husband Yakub Ali, were sent to jail on Thursday after they gave confessional statements before the court.

On June 16, the Directorate General of Health Services suspended the Central Hospital’s all operation theatre activities as its Intensive Care Unit and emergency services were found to be dissatisfactory.
